Slovak leaders clash over Ukraine support and eastern border security

Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka accused Prime Minister Robert Fico of misrepresenting Slovakia’s role in the “coalition of the willing” that backs Ukraine, calling the coalition a “club of war mongers” and saying the country’s non‑membership harms national interests. Fico denied that Slovakia is a member, stating the Slovak ambassador attended the July 13 meeting in Paris only as an observer.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák warned that Slovakia still lacks dedicated forces and resources to protect its eastern border with Ukraine. He criticised delayed preparations, calling the lack of coordinated training between the armed forces, interior ministry and intelligence services a serious security failure and urging immediate action.

Both statements highlight a domestic political dispute over Slovakia’s security policy and its stance toward the Ukraine conflict.
