Slovak MEP challenges Ursula von der Leyen over Ukraine funding
During a session in Strasbourg on October 21, Slovak MEP Milan Uhrík, president of the Republika movement, confronted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding proposed additional funding for Ukraine. Uhrík accused von der Leyen of attempting to extract an additional 70 billion euros from European citizens, who are already facing economic difficulties due to inflation and energy crises, to fund a conflict he characterized as having no military resolution.
Reports indicate that European leaders are seeking ways to finance approximately 70 billion euros required by Kyiv for 2027. While Brussels has planned 45 billion euros for next year, a definitive solution for the remaining balance is still being determined. The European Union has previously approved a 90 billion euro loan for 2026 and 2027, intended to cover both Ukrainian weaponry and budget support, backed by the European budget.
