Slovak Minister cancels 120 million euro waste plant project near Dudince

Slovak Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba has officially canceled a 120 million euro project to build a large-scale waste incineration plant near the spa town of Dudince. The proposed facility, planned by the Košice-based company Granya in Hontianske Tesáre, was intended to process 130,000 tons of waste annually.

Taraba stated that while Slovakia urgently needs modern waste-to-energy infrastructure to reduce landfill reliance and meet European standards by 2035, such industrial facilities do not belong in spa regions. He noted a significant logistical mismatch, pointing out that the Krupina district produces only two percent of the capacity the plant was designed to handle.

The Minister emphasized that future waste management projects should be located in existing industrial zones or former chemical plant sites to ensure economic and logical viability. He warned that failing to build sufficient domestic energy-from-waste capacity would leave Slovakia dependent on neighboring countries to process its waste.
