Slovak Ministry of Education proposes mathematics curriculum reform

The Slovak Ministry of Education is proposing a reform of mathematics education for secondary schools, shifting the focus from mechanical calculation and memorizing procedures to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The new educational standard aims to equip students with practical skills, such as data analysis, understanding probability, and logical argumentation, which are considered essential for modern life.

A key component of the proposal is the division of mathematics into two levels: a basic level and an advanced level. The basic level is intended to provide a common foundation for all students, fostering the mathematical literacy required for daily life and work. The advanced level is designed for students intending to pursue technical, scientific, economic, or mathematical fields.

Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker stated that the goal is not to lower knowledge requirements but to make mathematics more meaningful and applicable. The reform includes broader measures such as teacher training, the development of new educational materials, and a two-tier system for the school-leaving examination (maturita) in mathematics.
