Slovak National Bank warns of fake funeral insurance scams

The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) issued a warning that cybercriminals are using fraudulent funeral‑insurance offers to steal money and sensitive personal information. The scams are spread online and via social‑media platforms, often posing as legitimate insurers or financial institutions. Victims are prompted to provide details such as name, phone number, email, address, age, bank information and family situation, which criminals use to build detailed profiles for later, more sophisticated fraud attempts, including phone, email or SMS impersonations of banks or authorities.

NBS advises the public to verify whether a company or intermediary is authorised on the Slovak financial market register, avoid giving personal or financial data to unknown parties, and be wary of links that look suspicious. Users should monitor account notifications for unexpected movements and consult trusted persons before making significant decisions. The bank also listed basic protective rules to minimise the risk of falling victim to these schemes.
