Slovak National Party demands removal of Environment Minister

Political tensions in Slovakia have escalated as the Slovak National Party (SNS) demands the removal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. The dispute centers on the SNS's claim to the Ministry of Environment portfolio and disagreements over public tenders. Specifically, conflict has arisen regarding a nearly 500 million euro contract for turbine repairs at the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant, which the SNS alleges is overpriced by one-third.

SNS leadership has threatened significant parliamentary obstruction, including refusing to open the September session of the National Council, if Taraba does not resign or is not removed by Prime Minister Robert Fico by September 15. While Prime Minister Fico has expressed support for Taraba, the SNS maintains that coalition agreements regarding party nominations must be respected.

Potential successors face hurdles. SNS favorite Filip Kuffa faces opposition from Taraba and indications from President Peter Pellegrini, who stated he expects a nominee of higher quality who does not trigger controversy. Meanwhile, other potential compromise candidates, such as State Secretary Peter Deďo, have reportedly declined interest in the position.
