Slovak National Theatre premieres ‘The Csardas Princess’ operetta

The Slovak National Theatre (SND) has premiered a new production of Emmerich Kálmán’s operetta ‘The Csardas Princess’ (Čardášová princezná), directed by Ján Ďurovčík. The production marks a return of the operetta genre to the SND stage.

New Opera Chief Andrea Hlinková noted that while the genre is often viewed as light, this specific production is physically and musically demanding. The work features a modern Slovak translation and explores themes of social differences through the story of a Budapest cabaret star and a Viennese prince. The production features prominent performers including Jolana Fogašová and Tomáš Juhás.

The premiere drew various public figures and political personalities. Conservative politician György Gyimesi attended the event, commenting that the successful, well-attended production serves as evidence that culture remains vibrant despite claims of its devastation.
