Slovakia PM Robert Fico questions NATO Article 5 collective defense
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed skepticism regarding NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause, stating he will do everything to prevent Slovakia from being drawn into military conflicts. During a speech in Prešov, Fico questioned the logic of preparing thousands of soldiers for unspecified conflicts and argued that European leaders should prioritize peace negotiations over military escalation.
Fico also criticized EU budget allocations for the 2028–2034 period, suggesting that defense corporations, rather than citizens, will be the primary beneficiaries. Despite these remarks, the Slovak military is still scheduled to participate in the NATO Eastern Sentry airspace monitoring mission in Poland and Romania.
Opposition parties, including Sloboda a Solidarita (SaS) and Kresťanskodemokratické hnutie (KDH), have strongly condemned Fico’s statements. They argue that questioning Article 5 undermines Slovakia’s national security and sends a signal of unreliability to international allies. SaS has called for the Prime Minister to convene the National Security Council to clarify the government's stance, while KDH warned that such rhetoric weakens the country's most vital security guarantee.
