Slovak Parliament dismisses Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba

The Slovak Parliament has voted to dismiss Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba, marking the first vote of no confidence in a cabinet member in 33 years. The dismissal was supported by the opposition and the coalition partner, the Slovak National Party (SNS), despite Taraba's original nomination by the party.

The move follows intense personal friction between Taraba and SNS leader Andrej Danko. While Prime Minister Robert Fico initially hesitated to intervene, the political fallout has raised questions regarding the stability of his fourth government, which is described by observers as particularly weak.

Independent MP Jana Bittó Cigániková faced criticism for her decision not to vote for Taraba's removal, though she denied any agreement with the coalition. Analysts suggest that Taraba may use his position in the National Council to build a new political project, potentially serving as a future leader or a new coalition partner for Fico's Smer party.
