Slovak parliament fails to open session to vote no‑confidence in Education Minister Tomáš Drucker

Parliamentarians in Slovakia attempted to convene an extraordinary session on Tuesday to consider a vote of no‑confidence in Education Minister Tomáš Drucker, but the meeting could not be opened because only 63 deputies were present, short of the required majority. A second attempt to start the session has been scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The motion was submitted by opposition parties KDH, PS and Hnutie Slovensko, which criticize the minister for the rollout of the ePrihlášky digital school‑enrollment system, calling it costly, untested and philosophically flawed. Critics argued that the system decides school placement by an automatic ranking and said, “If a child is accepted to several schools, the final decision must be left to the parents.”

The Ministry of Education responded that the large‑scale system is not without errors but defended its usefulness, noting that “more than 130,000 parents have already used the system and Slovakia has moved toward a more modern and transparent admissions process.” It also highlighted that the ePrihlášky initiative is part of a recovery plan established under the previous government.
