Slovak PM Fico meets UEFA President amid football association debt crisis

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met with UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin and Slovak Football Association (SFZ) President Ján Kováčik to discuss the financial stability of Slovak football.

The SFZ is facing a significant financial crisis, with official 2025 financial statements indicating debts of nearly 24 million euros across the association and its subsidiaries. Additionally, the SFZ is involved in a major legal issue regarding third-party mobile phone guarantees valued at approximately 25 million euros. The Ministry of Tourism and Sport has already suspended one quarterly contribution to the association due to violations of statutes and laws.

There are concerns that the meeting may involve discussions regarding advanced funding or loans from UEFA to help the SFZ manage its debts and prevent a total collapse.
