Slovak PM Robert Fico accuses EU of double standards over constitutional amendment
Prime Minister Robert Fico spoke by phone with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, condemning a recent EU resolution that criticises Slovakia. Fico said the EU shows a “double meter, double standard” and defended a recent amendment to the Slovak Constitution that places Slovak law above EU law on issues of national identity, private life and marriage. He questioned why the EU Parliament was silent during alleged illegal prosecutions in Slovakia between 2020 and 2023, and noted that his governing coalition lacks a constitutional majority, requiring opposition support for the amendment.
After the conversation with Metsola, Fico called European Council President António Costa, urging the council to devote more attention to EU economic growth and high energy prices that hurt competitiveness. He also mentioned he would raise the issue of refunds for weapons donated to Ukraine.
