Slovak PM Robert Fico backs nuclear and hydro power, urges V4 cohesion

Prime Minister Robert Fico said Slovakia does not need wind power and will focus on large electricity‑generating capacity from nuclear and hydro sources. He noted that more than 70% of the country's electricity already comes from nuclear plants, a share that is set to rise toward 80%, and cited new projects such as a Volvo electric‑car factory, a battery plant and expanding data‑centre and AI activity that will increase demand.

Fico also stressed that if the Visegrád Group (V4) presents a unified stance, Brussels cannot ignore it. He called for coordinated positions among the four V4 leaders on EU matters, including the EU budget, cohesion policy and the possibility of joint vetoes. He said the first V4 meeting should focus on high energy prices and mentioned inviting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the talks.
