Slovakia police warn of third wave SMS fraud demanding fake traffic fines

The Slovak Police have issued a warning about a third wave of fraudulent SMS messages that impersonate the traffic police and demand payment of a fictitious administrative fine. The messages, often sent from foreign numbers such as the Philippines, state that the alleged debt must be settled by midnight on 23 June, otherwise court action will be taken. Recipients are directed to a counterfeit website that mimics the Ministry of Interior’s design to capture personal and payment data.

Police stress that legitimate traffic‑violation notices are never delivered via SMS; they are sent by post or through an official electronic mailbox and contain specific legal identifiers. Victims are advised not to open links, not to provide personal or card details, and to report any incidents to the police. Those who have already entered data should contact their bank immediately and consider changing passwords.

The warning aims to protect citizens, especially vulnerable seniors, from the financial loss and identity‑theft risks associated with this phishing campaign.
