Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claims 2003 EU referendum was rigged

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has claimed that the 2003 referendum regarding Slovakia’s accession to the European Union was fraudulent. Speaking at an event organized by his party, Smer, Fico asserted that the results were manipulated to ensure the necessary outcome for EU membership.

Fico stated that while the accession process was marked by high public enthusiasm, the actual voting results were extremely narrow. He suggested that adjustments were made during the counting process to meet expectations and secure the country’s entry into the Union. He noted that without the support of the opposition at the time, specifically Smer and former Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, the referendum would not have succeeded.

The official 2003 referendum saw a voter turnout of approximately 52 percent, with nearly 94 percent of participants voting in favor of EU membership. Slovakia officially became a member of the European Union in 2004.
