Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico Reaffirms Same‑Sex Marriage Ban

Prime Minister Robert Fico said the Slovak Constitution defines marriage exclusively as a union of a man and a woman and therefore the state will not register same‑sex marriages, even if they were performed abroad. He emphasized the need to protect the constitutional definition and announced plans to strengthen the law governing marriage registries. Fico criticised the European Commission’s objection to Slovakia’s stance, describing it as a “legal war” that the government will not lose. He linked the issue to upcoming elections in 2027 and warned that liberal or progressive forces might push for extreme changes.

The statement reinforces Slovakia’s existing legal framework that excludes recognition of same‑sex unions and signals continued resistance to EU pressure on LGBT rights.
