Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shares Putin‑provided Ukraine peace clues and warns over border drone strike

Prime Minister Robert Fico said that during a May 9 meeting in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin, he received “extraordinary information” about how Russia envisions a settlement of the war in Ukraine. Fico stated he will pass the details to EU leaders and also conveyed President Volodymyr Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate. The talks also covered the restart of a Russian‑Slovak economic cooperation committee and reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to continue supplying energy to Slovakia, a point Fico linked to broader EU energy‑policy debates.

A few days later, Fico expressed alarm at a Russian drone attack carried out near the Slovak‑Ukrainian border, describing the incident as “unsettling” and urging an immediate cease‑fire agreement. He warned that continued European support for the war would prolong the conflict and said he would convene the Slovak security council if the threat level escalated. The prime minister also noted the postponement of a planned meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Bratislava.
