Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico vows to block recognition of same‑sex marriages

Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia said in a video posted to social media that the government will not accept any attempts to recognise same‑sex marriages. He described the current situation as “not a normal time” and emphasized that “the definition of marriage in the Slovak Constitution as the unique bond of a man and a woman must be protected.”

Fico announced plans for a rapid legislative amendment that would prohibit any legal recognition of marriages performed abroad by same‑sex couples. He accused the European Commission of “hating sovereign positions” and said that while minorities are respected, their duty is to protect the Constitution. He suggested the measure could be adopted by the state holiday of St. Cyril and St. Methodius.
