Slovak Social Insurance Agency manages EU pension transfers

The Slovak Social Insurance Agency (Sociálna poisťovňa) facilitates pension payments to retirees living across Europe. In 2024, the agency paid out 33,011 pensions to individuals in EU countries, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, with the highest numbers directed to the Czech Republic and Germany.

For retirees living within the EU, such as in Croatia or Spain, pensions are sent in regular monthly installments. However, recipients must fulfill specific administrative duties to ensure timely payments. Specifically, retirees are required to provide a ‘Confirmation of Life’ (Potvrdenie o žití) to the Social Insurance Agency at regular intervals. In the EU, this document must be submitted annually in January via mail to the Bratislava headquarters or by email. An exception exists for the Czech Republic, where the two institutions exchange data electronically.

In contrast, retirees living in non-EU countries face stricter requirements. Payments are made retroactively every three months, and only after the agency receives a notarized ‘Confirmation of Life’ that is no more than one month old.
