Slovak police warn of new SMS and email tax‑refund scams

The Slovak Police have issued a fresh warning about increasingly sophisticated SMS fraud. The latest messages claim a mobile phone has fallen into a toilet and urge recipients to click a link that redirects to WhatsApp, where personal data or money are demanded. Police advise anyone receiving such messages to ignore the link, verify the sender through a known phone number or other trusted channel, and avoid acting under time pressure.

The Financial Administration of Slovakia has also alerted citizens to a wave of fraudulent e‑mails that impersonate tax officials and promise tax‑refund payments. The messages contain links that request banking credentials, leading victims to lose their savings. A spokesperson, Daniel Kováč, stresses that the administration never asks for personal or bank details via e‑mail and urges the public to delete suspicious messages and contact the police if in doubt.
