Slovakia adopts community‑service sanctions for minor offences

An amendment to Slovakia's administrative offence law, which took effect on 16 July, permits municipalities to impose mandatory community work in place of monetary fines. Local authorities may order offenders to perform 20‑150 hours (10‑75 for juveniles) of tasks such as street cleaning, vegetation maintenance, cultural‑site upkeep or assistance with social‑service activities. The law aims to address cases where fines cannot be paid and to help municipalities with labour shortages, while limits are set to prevent abuse.

Implementation details are still being clarified. District offices recorded 49,765 offences in 2024, generating fines totalling over €580,000. The amendment also raises maximum fines for certain violations. Officials report uncertainty about how to apply the new sanction and await guidance from the Ministry of the Interior.
