Slovakia and Czech Republic authorities target major investment fraud schemes
Law enforcement agencies in Slovakia and the Czech Republic are reporting significant investment fraud operations. In Slovakia, investigators have uncovered a Ponzi scheme that allegedly defrauded over 500 people of approximately 31 million euros. The scheme utilized a network of companies promising high returns on investments in stocks, cryptocurrencies, and real estate. Victims were shown fabricated growth on professional-looking client portals, while older investors were paid using funds from new participants. Police have detained 11 individuals and seized assets worth roughly 1.5 million euros, including cryptocurrency wallets.
In the Czech Republic, police in Litoměřice have charged a man acting as a financial courier for an organized fraud group. The individual allegedly collected 495,000 CZK from victims under the guise of mandatory tax payments or further investments. The courier used encrypted applications to communicate with organizers and utilized secret passwords like ‘bitcoin’ to facilitate handovers of cash in envelopes. The suspect faces up to six years in prison for money laundering.
