Slovakia and Czechia implement or debate new family support policies
In Slovakia, the National Council has approved a law to significantly increase minimum child support. Effective January 1, 2027, the minimum amount will rise from 30 percent of the subsistence minimum for an unsupported child to 100 percent. This change will increase the monthly payment from approximately 40.44 euros to 134.80 euros.
In the Czech Republic, discussions regarding declining birth rates have surfaced. Former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš proposed ideas such as a one-million koruna payment for a second child and lifelong tax breaks for a third. However, economic experts from the National Budget Council have criticized these proposals, noting they could cost at least 45 billion koruna annually and may lack effectiveness in addressing the demographic decline, which saw birth rates hit a historic low in 2025.
