Slovakia approves new nuclear energy strategy through 2030

The Slovak government has approved a new strategic document regarding the policy, principles, and strategy for the safe use of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation. The strategy outlines key objectives for the period between 2026 and 2030, focusing on supporting the safe use of nuclear energy and conducting experimental research into new risks.

The document highlights an “alarmingly missing experimental infrastructure” and aims to address this by supporting research into new technologies, such as modular and advanced reactors, as well as fusion energy. To support these advancements, the government intends to improve the technical and material security of specialized laboratories and workstations.

Education is a central pillar of the new strategy, with plans to promote scientific and technical specializations in secondary and higher education to ensure a new generation of nuclear experts. Additionally, the government seeks to update and simplify legal regulations to reduce administrative and financial burdens while maintaining or increasing safety standards. The government has also expanded the powers of the commissioner for the development of nuclear energy to coordinate the preparation and implementation of new nuclear projects.
