Bear attacks elderly woman in Blatnica, Slovakia

A brown bear attacked a 79-year-old woman in the village square of Blatnica, Slovakia. The woman, a botanist, sustained scratches to her arm during the encounter and was treated at a hospital in Martin before being released for home care. The incident was captured on municipal security cameras and caused significant local concern.

In response to the attack, the FATRA intervention team began monitoring the area using thermal imaging drones. Conservationists have urged residents to remain vigilant and stay on marked paths. Environmental groups noted that bears are often drawn to human settlements by easily accessible food sources, such as unsecured trash or livestock feed.

This incident follows another recent bear encounter in the Žilina Region, where a bear was shot near Mošovce earlier in September. Additionally, a separate attack in the village of Necpaly resulted in serious injuries to a livestock herder.
