Slovakia: Changes to September 15 holiday and upcoming National Pilgrimage

The feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, the patron saint of Slovakia, will undergo changes in 2026. Due to Law No. 261/2025 Z. z. regarding the consolidation of public finances, September 15, 2026, will no longer be a day of rest. While it remains a religious holiday, it will be a standard working day for most employees. However, those required to work on this day are entitled to a holiday pay supplement of at least 100% of their average earnings.

In conjunction with the religious significance of the date, the Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of Mary in Šaštín is preparing for the National Pilgrimage from September 12 to 16. The program focuses on the theme ‘Seven Sorrows of Mary – Mother of Life’ and commemorates the fifth anniversary of Pope Francis’s visit to Slovakia. The event will include holy masses, concerts, and family activities, with major celebrations led by Archbishop Stanislav Zvolenský and other religious leaders.
