Slovakia consumer loan failure rates rise amid high interest rates

Consumer installment purchases present significant financial risks for households, according to data and analysis from the National Bank of Slovakia and Tatra banka. Reports indicate that the failure rate for consumer loans has risen from 7.3% to 8.1% as of March 2026, with interest rates remaining near 9%.

Key pitfalls in installment buying include focusing solely on the monthly payment rather than the total cost of the loan. For example, an 8,000 euro e-bike financed over 72 months at a 5.99% annual rate can result in a total payment of 9,512.55 euros, adding over 1,500 euros in costs.

Financial experts warn that consumers must also account for how these payments interact with other rising living expenses, such as rent, energy, and food. The National Bank of Slovakia's May 2026 financial stability report notes that high interest rates and slower income growth are placing increased pressure on household budgets.
