Slovakia D1 motorway tunnels face disruptions from breakdown and fire

Multiple incidents involving tunnels on the D1 motorway in Slovakia have caused significant traffic disruptions.

In the Branisko Tunnel, traffic was blocked in the direction of Poprad due to a broken-down truck obstructing the entrance. While the tunnel remained impassable in that direction, the lane heading toward Prešov remained open.

Separately, a vehicle fire occurred in the Višňové Tunnel when a Volvo XC60 caught fire approximately one kilometer before the exit toward Martin. The incident required the closure of both tunnel tubes for safety while firefighters from Žilina and Martin responded. Drivers trapped in the tunnel were instructed via the safety system to abandon their vehicles and seek shelter in emergency exits. No injuries were reported, and the tunnel structure sustained no damage.
