Slovakia economic sentiment declines as industrial confidence drops

Slovakia's economic sentiment worsened in August, dropping 4.4 points to a level of 95. This decline was primarily driven by a sharp drop in industrial confidence, which fell 17 points to -15, the lowest level since June 2023. Companies in the industrial sector reported reduced production expectations for the coming months and rising inventories, particularly in coke and refined petroleum products.

Miroslav Štefánik, director of the Economic Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, warned of a potential downward spiral if structural issues are not addressed. He noted that while the country is currently benefiting from returns on past foreign investments, particularly in the automotive industry, there is insufficient reinvestment into the economy. Štefánik emphasized the need for reforms in education and human capital to counter demographic challenges and maintain national competitiveness.
