Czech Republic and Slovakia endure extreme heat wave and storm warnings

Temperatures across the Czech Republic and Slovakia have surged to 40 °C or higher, prompting the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) and the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) to issue high‑level heat alerts. The heat stress is expected to strain human health, transport, livestock and energy systems, while the dry conditions raise the risk of wildfires.

Strong thunderstorms are forecast for the region, with wind gusts of 70–100 km/h, hail up to 2 cm and brief heavy rain. Meteorologists warn that these storms can exacerbate the heat load and cause localized flooding. In Slovakia, rail operator Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) has imposed temporary speed limits of 50 km/h on several lines and advises passengers to allow extra travel time and stay hydrated.

Both countries will continue to monitor the situation, with cooling fronts expected later in the week, but the immediate threat to public health and infrastructure remains high.
