On 6 August 2026 the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) recorded a temperature of 42.2 °C in the village of Dolné Plachtince, surpassing the previous Slovak record of 41.4 °C set on 5 August. The same day a temperature of 41.6 °C was measured in Štrkovci, and several stations across the country reported values above 40 °C for the third consecutive day.

In neighbouring Austria, a heatwave produced three consecutive days with temperatures of at least 40 °C for the first time in its history, including a 41.2 °C reading in Bad Deutsch‑Altenburg. Austria also set new all‑time location records at 27 stations.

SHMÚ issued first‑degree thunderstorm warnings for districts in the Trenčín and Žilina regions, and the first lightning of the day was recorded at 12:48 near the Slovak‑Hungarian border. Emergency services logged dozens of heat‑related calls as the extreme heat persisted across the region.
