Slovakia expands water commission and announces regional infrastructure investments

Slovakia is strengthening its approach to water management and drought prevention through new institutional structures and regional investments. The National Commission for Water and Drought has expanded its format in Bratislava to include an expert college designed to coordinate data collection, monitoring, and strategic planning across ministries and scientific institutions.

Minister of Agriculture Richard Takáč noted that 100 million euros have been allocated in the upcoming budget for water retention measures. The commission will focus on areas such as irrigation development, water reservoir management, and creating crisis mechanisms for drought periods.

In the Danubian region, Vice-Premier and Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba announced 18 million euros in investments benefiting over 30,000 residents. These funds target water infrastructure, energy efficiency, and waste management. A key component includes a 11.8 million euro wastewater treatment plant serving Kráľová pri Senci, Kostolná pri Dunaji, and Hrubá Borša, protecting the Žitný ostrov area, which serves as a major drinking water reservoir for Central Europe.
