Europe weather outlook: Mild winter expected despite potential arctic shifts
Meteorological models for the 2026/2027 season suggest a milder winter for much of Europe compared to previous years. European models, including ECMWF data, indicate above-average temperatures across the continent, which may limit significant snowfall despite an increase in winter precipitation in some central regions.
However, experts warn of potential volatility. A weakening polar vortex in the second half of winter, particularly around January and February 2027, could allow arctic air to penetrate lower latitudes, bringing sudden cold snaps. While seasonal forecasts suggest warmer conditions, the interaction between El Niño and atmospheric shifts remains a key factor for long-term monitoring.
In specific regions, immediate weather patterns show varied conditions. Parts of Slovenia and Slovakia are experiencing rain, fog, and fluctuating temperatures, with some mountainous areas already seeing early snow. In Slovakia, high-altitude warnings have been issued for strong winds reaching up to 135 km/h.
