Slovakia faces extreme drought as climate regime shifts
Slovakia is facing a severe environmental crisis as extreme drought conditions transition into a new climate regime. Scientific analysis indicates that extreme drought episodes in the country have more than doubled, affecting approximately three-quarters of the territory.
Experts emphasize that the crisis is driven not by a lack of rainfall, but by a thirsty atmosphere that significantly increases evaporation rates. This phenomenon causes the land to dry out even during years with normal precipitation levels. Satellite imagery from the Geographical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences confirms this, showing a dramatic shift from green vegetation to brown, dried-out landscapes in agricultural lowlands compared to the previous year.
Urban areas are also struggling, as many Slovak cities were not designed for such intense heat and lack the green infrastructure necessary to mitigate heat islands.
