Slovakia faces high social polarization driven by media and politics
Slovakia has been ranked second in Europe for social polarization. This phenomenon is driven by a media and political landscape that prioritizes hatred and emotional intensity over objective truth or logical argumentation.
Drawing on concepts such as Gore Vidal’s ‘third way of informing’ and Noam Chomsky’s propaganda models, the analysis suggests that modern media and political actors use dehumanization and defamatory labels to mobilize voters. In the digital attention economy, social media algorithms reward the speed and intensity of emotions—specifically fear transformed into hatred—rather than depth of thought. This has resulted in a political environment where substantive debate on reforms or economic context is replaced by polarizing rhetoric.
