Slovakia faces low wages and urban congestion challenges
Slovakia continues to face economic challenges compared to its European neighbors. According to an international comparison of 27 economies for 2025, the average annual gross wage in Slovakia reached 19,590 euros, or approximately 1,633 euros per month. This places Slovakia near the bottom of the ranking, surpassed only by Turkey.
While domestic statistics from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic show a 6.3% increase in nominal monthly wages to 1,620 euros, real wage growth was only 2.2% after accounting for inflation. Slovakia lags behind regional peers such as Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well as Southern European nations like Portugal and Greece.
In the capital, Bratislava, residents face high housing costs and traffic congestion. Data from the TomTom Traffic Index indicates a congestion rate of nearly 43%, with drivers spending approximately 71 hours stuck in traffic annually. Despite these issues, Bratislava's traffic metrics remain more favorable than those in Prague or Vienna, and residents report relatively high satisfaction with life in the city.
