Slovakia faces political tension amid official dismissals and legal disputes

Slovakia is experiencing significant political shifts and internal tensions. Minister of Culture Martina Šimkovičová has dismissed Lukáš Machala from his position as Secretary General of the Service Office. Šimkovičová cited differing visions and a breakdown in trust, noting that Machala had become too prominent a public figure rather than acting as a ‘grey eminence’ for the ministry. She also distanced herself from his previous public statements.

Simultaneously, political friction is rising between Prime Minister Robert Fico and Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka. Fico has called for Žilinka’s resignation, a move Žilinka has characterized as a ‘frontal attack on the rule of law.’ The dispute is part of a broader period of instability within the governing coalition, which includes debates over the state budget, defense spending, and the potential dismissal of the Minister of Environment.
