Influenza cases rise in Slovakia as respiratory infection season begins
As colder weather arrives in Slovakia, respiratory infections such as influenza are increasing. Medical experts warn that influenza is a highly contagious viral infection caused by influenza viruses, primarily types A and B, and should not be mistaken for a common cold.
Typical symptoms include sudden onset of high fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, fatigue, and a dry cough. While most people recover within a week, the illness can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, worsening of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, and complications for diabetics.
High-risk groups include seniors, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses. Experts recommend prevention through hygiene, rest, and annual vaccination. Regarding treatment, antibiotics are only effective if a bacterial complication is confirmed via a CRP test, as they do not treat viruses. Antivirals are most effective when administered within 48 hours of symptom onset.
