Slovakia: Financial fraud warnings and banking fee alerts

Consumers in Slovakia are facing two distinct financial risks: fraudulent SMS scams and unexpected banking or insurance fees.

The Financial Administration has warned of a wave of phishing SMS messages claiming that citizens are entitled to a €450 refund. These messages contain malicious links designed to steal sensitive personal and banking information. Officials emphasize that the state does not communicate via SMS links for such transactions and advise citizens to verify any tax information only through official government portals.

Separately, experts highlight the importance of monitoring bank and credit card statements to identify unwanted charges. Common issues include ‘opt-out’ insurance policies attached to loans, premium account fees for unused services, and dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees. Regularly reviewing statements can help identify and cancel these unauthorized or unnecessary costs.
