Slovakia: Guide to planting summer flowers in July

Gardeners in Slovakia can add colour to their beds and containers by sowing several fast‑growing summer plants in July. Recommended species include calendula (Calendula officinalis), lavender (Lavandula), annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and zinnia, each of which tolerates summer heat, prefers well‑draining soil and benefits from regular watering and occasional feeding. Calendula and lavender also attract pollinators and deter some pests, while sunflowers thrive in full sun and benefit from staking. Zinnias bloom continuously into autumn and are easy to sow directly into the soil.

Nemesia, a South‑African annual also known as hľadíkovka, is highlighted for hanging baskets and window boxes. It offers a wide palette of flower colours, prefers sunny to partially shaded positions, and requires careful watering to avoid water‑logging. Regular fertilisation and removal of excess water from containers help maintain prolific blooming throughout the summer season.
