Slovakia heat wave spurs animal‑care and cold‑water safety advice

During an intense summer heat wave in Slovakia, experts warned that extreme temperatures threaten both wildlife and domestic animals. Providing shallow dishes of clean water in shaded areas can help birds, insects, stray cats and farm livestock regulate their body temperature and avoid dehydration, organ failure or death. In urban areas, the heat‑island effect further reduces natural moisture sources, making supplemental water essential.

Rescue services also cautioned swimmers about the dangers of jumping from hot environments into much colder water. Sudden temperature changes can cause vasoconstriction, rapid heart‑rate spikes, breath‑holding reflexes and, in severe cases, cardiac events or drowning. Authorities advise a gradual cooling approach and highlight the risk of panic‑induced inhalation of water.
