Slovakia implements alcohol ban for motorcycle and bicycle passengers

A new amendment to the road traffic law in Slovakia, which took effect on September 1, introduces a ban on alcohol and drugs for passengers on motorcycles, bicycles, and other category L vehicles.

The Ministry of Interior justified the change by stating that passengers can actively influence the course of a journey. This is particularly relevant for multi-person bicycles, small electric vehicles designed for two or more people, and motorcycles. Even if a passenger does not physically steer, their presence under the influence can distract the driver or make it difficult to manage unpredictable movements.

Under the new rules, passengers may be required by police to undergo alcohol or drug testing, similar to the driver. Additionally, the amendment introduces changes regarding cyclists, allowing children under the age of 15 to ride on sidewalks, provided they do not endanger or obstruct pedestrians and maintain walking speed.
