Slovakia implements new EU regulations for platform workers

New regulations are being implemented in Slovakia to transpose EU Directive 2024/2831 into national law, specifically targeting platform-based work. The changes affect couriers and drivers, regardless of where the digital platform is headquartered.

A key feature of the legislation is the introduction of a rebuttable legal presumption of employment. If a worker or union demonstrates circumstances suggesting a relationship of subordination to a platform's instructions, the platform must prove that an employment relationship does not exist. While this does not automatically grant employee status to all contractors, courts will determine the nature of the relationship.

The law also aims to increase transparency regarding algorithmic management. Platforms must inform workers how automated systems function, the data used, and how these systems impact tasks and pay. Furthermore, human oversight will be strengthened for significant decisions, and stricter data protection rules will prohibit the monitoring of sensitive personal information or workers during non-working hours.
