Slovakia implements new rules for document authentication and data protection

New regulations in Slovakia regarding document authentication and personal data protection are impacting how citizens handle sensitive information. Under Law No. 78/2026 Z. z., which took effect on September 1, 2026, municipalities are restricted from authenticating copies of certain documents. This includes identity cards, driver's licenses, health insurance cards, and documents containing security features like holograms or watermarks, such as diplomas or certificates. For these specific items, citizens must instead seek services from a notary.

Additionally, the sharing of driver's licenses poses significant privacy risks. A single license contains at least 13 pieces of personal data, including name, date of birth, place of birth, and various identification numbers. To comply with the principle of data minimization under Slovak personal data protection laws, individuals are advised to be cautious when providing digital copies to third parties, such as car rental services, and to ensure they understand why the data is being collected and how it will be stored.
