Slovakia implements stricter rules for repeat traffic offenders

New amendments to the road traffic law in Slovakia, effective as of September 1, introduce stricter measures for repeat offenders. Drivers who commit three serious traffic violations within a 12-month period are now classified as road recidivists and must undergo a mandatory rehabilitation program.

In addition to the rehabilitation program, these drivers are required to complete a remedial course and pass a professional competence examination. The Ministry of Interior proposed these changes to align the requirements for experienced drivers with those already in place for new drivers, who must undergo similar procedures after two serious violations. The Ministry noted that repeated failures by experienced drivers may indicate persistent issues with rule compliance or a decline in driving ability.

The legislative update also includes several other changes, such as increased sanctions for speeding in certain cases, new regulations for small electric vehicles like e-scooters, and updated rules for driving schools and taxi services. Additionally, U-turns at traffic lights are now permitted under the new regulations.
