Slovakia implements stricter traffic laws and higher fines

Slovakia is implementing stricter road traffic regulations effective September 1. The new rules aim to increase road safety and reduce accidents by imposing significantly higher fines for speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and endangering pedestrians. In pedestrian zones, the maximum speed limit will be reduced to 10 km/h.

Under the new system, drivers who commit three serious traffic violations within a 12-month period must undergo a rehabilitation program with a transport psychologist. This program focuses on impulse control, stress management, and attitudes toward speeding and phone use. A fourth serious violation within a year can result in the suspension of a driver's license for at least three months. Notably, violations committed on bicycles or small electric vehicles, such as electric scooters, will also be factored into these penalties. Fines for various offenses can reach up to 1,300 euros.

Additionally, new rules regarding intersections specify that exits from parking lots, gas stations, and private areas are no longer considered intersections, meaning drivers exiting these locations must always yield to traffic on the main road. Reversing at signaled intersections is also strictly prohibited.
