Slovakia and Poland implement stricter traffic and driving regulations

New traffic regulations and stricter enforcement measures are being implemented in Slovakia and Poland. In Poland, new rules for novice drivers include a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs during a probationary period, which can last between two and three years depending on the driver's age. However, experts have warned that modern laboratory sensitivity may detect trace amounts of substances from food, such as poppy seeds or non-alcoholic beverages, which do not impair driving ability.

In Slovakia, several legislative changes are taking effect. As of September 1, 2026, drivers exceeding speed limits by more than 50 km/h in built-up areas or 60 km/h outside of them face fines up to 1,300 euros and potential license suspensions for up to three years. Additionally, new rules extend alcohol prohibitions to passengers on motorcycles, quad bikes, and multi-person bicycles who may influence the vehicle's stability or the driver's attention.

Furthermore, starting October 1, 2026, Slovakia will implement an automated system to monitor compulsory third-party liability insurance (PZP). The state will be able to automatically cross-reference databases to identify uninsured vehicles. Owners of vehicles without valid insurance for more than 30 days may face repeated fines ranging from 120 to 900 euros, with the amount doubling for subsequent offenses.
