Slovakia introduces AI healthcare funding and oncology pilot projects

Slovakia is advancing healthcare through new technological and systemic initiatives. At the OMICON 2026 cardiology conference in Bratislava, Health Minister Kamil Šaško announced that the company Powerful Medical will receive 19 million euros in support from the Program Slovensko. This funding is intended for the research and development of PMcardio, an artificial intelligence solution designed to assist in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.

In a separate development, the General Health Insurance Company (VšZP) has launched a pilot project to support multidisciplinary teams (MDT) in oncology. The initiative aims to formalize and collect data on the collaborative work of specialists—including surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists—who jointly determine treatment plans for cancer patients. The pilot is being implemented across four institutions: the National Oncology Institute, the St. Elizabeth Oncology Institute in Bratislava, the Eastern Slovak Oncology Institute in Košice, and the Faculty Hospital in Banská Bystrica.
