Slovakia introduces alcohol testing for motorcycle passengers

Slovakia has implemented new traffic regulations allowing police to conduct alcohol tests on passengers of motorcycles and tandem bicycles. The measure aims to enhance road safety, as an intoxicated passenger can compromise the stability and balance of a two-wheeled vehicle.

Under the new rules, if a passenger tests positive for alcohol, they are primarily responsible for the fine, which is 50 euros on the spot or up to 100 euros through administrative proceedings. Additionally, the intoxicated passenger is prohibited from continuing the journey.

A notable exception applies to passengers under the age of 15; in such cases, the responsibility falls on the vehicle operator. While some motorists have questioned whether drivers should be held accountable for the sobriety of adult passengers, authorities state that drivers cannot force passengers to undergo testing, meaning adults are responsible for their own conduct.
