Slovakia labor market: Low-wage roles and negotiation trends

Recent data from the Platy.sk portal highlights significant wage disparities and negotiation challenges within the Slovak labor market. A ranking of the ten lowest-paid positions shows that several roles earn significantly less than the national average salary of 1,611 EUR recorded in the first quarter.

Among the lowest-earning professions are school caretakers, hotel bellhops, and physiotherapists, all of whom earn approximately 1,090 EUR. Other low-wage sectors include the textile industry, with tailors and seamstresses earning around 1,080 EUR, and postal workers earning roughly 1,077 EUR.

Regarding salary negotiations, a survey of 2,617 respondents revealed that 40% of job seekers never attempt to negotiate a higher salary during interviews. While 25% of those who do negotiate succeed in increasing their starting pay, success rates are notably lower for those in the lowest income brackets. The study also noted a gender gap in negotiation confidence: 40% of men reported feeling confident during negotiations, compared to less than 30% of women.
