Slovakia launches 1.1 million euro grant for small municipalities

The Slovak Ministry of Investment, Regional Development and Informatization (MIRRI) has launched the ‘Million for Small Municipalities’ grant initiative. The program has allocated 1,110,178 euros to support local governments with populations of 500 residents or fewer.

Eligible municipalities can receive grants ranging from 1,000 to 3,500 euros without the requirement for co-financing. The funds are intended for the purchase of construction materials and the renovation or improvement of public spaces, infrastructure, and public services. Minister Samuel Migaľ noted that small municipalities often have limited budgets and have historically been overlooked in larger EU funding schemes.

The allocation is distributed across Slovak regions based on the number of small municipalities they contain. The Prešov region is set to receive the largest portion, with 347,000 euros, followed by the Banská Bystrica (273,000 euros), Košice (171,000 euros), and Nitra (98,000 euros) regions.

To reduce administrative burdens, applications must be submitted electronically via the eGrant system. This simplified process is designed so that municipalities do not need to hire professional project managers to complete the applications. The deadline for submissions is October 5, 2026.
